Daily Ensemble: The Lost Day

I completely forgot to post this outfit of the day. My dream about fish reminded me. I dream about fish a lot.

Fashion Inspiration

Everyone has those people that they look to when they're in need of a little inspiration. Mine include, but are definitely not limited to:

1. Wednesday Addams
My sister took me to the new Addams family musical when I was home over break. Despite our nose bleed seats we loved it! And it reminded me how much I love Wednesday. And how I have seriously contemplated naming my first daughter Wednesday.

2. Effy from Skins
I don't know how many Americans watch this hilarious show, but I love it. Of course it's a little dramatic (drugs, sex, etc.) but the actors are so endearing. I especially love Effy, who verges on slutty, but has such a devil may care attitude that you can't help but love her.

I want to try and make a feather shirt like this...

3. Blair Waldorf
Love to hate her, but Blair's got serious style. Sometimes I think she veers towards matronly, but I do love those headbands!

4. Alexa Chung
Despite not watching, It's on with Alexa Chung, I was still sad when it got cancelled. Because I think she's so cute and does such a great job of mixing vintage, designer, and topshop.

5. Rachel Bilson
Full disclosure: I loved the OC. I watched it religiously. And Rachel as Summer was my favorite. Because she fell in love with the nerd, who reminds me of R.

I'm pretty sure that it a lollipop in her hand, at least I hope it is

6. Zooey Deschanel
I've blogged about my love for Zooey before. I love her music, I love her movies... she seems like she'd be fun to hang out with. Which is kind of a requirement for being one of my style icons. And she wears black tights all the time.

Ritz Crackers

My sister bought the Ritz Cracker necklace because she is cool and can pull off things like that. Expect pictures and a product review soon!

There are 21 items under the search "Ritz cracker" on etsy. That is crazy, in a wonderful way.

You could get ritz cracker hairpins

Yale Days

There are days when I am just blown away by the sheer amazingess of Yale. Today has been one of those days. I went from an amazing art history lecture to a wonderful discussion on regency romance novels to two readings by two incredible but totally different authors.

The first was my teacher, Lauren Willig, who is the author of the very successful Pink Carnation series. She read an excerpt from her new book, The Betrayal of the Blood Lily.

Just a few hours earlier I had been in class with Professor Willig, so it was very cool to see her other life. As a future teacher (hopefully) and writer I am finding Professor Willig's class fascinating because we are being taught by two people who actually know what it is like to write and teach. I hope to learn a lot from them, and I can't wait to read the book!

The second reading was by Pulitzer prize winning novelist, Junot Diaz. If you haven't read The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao, go do so immediately. I only got to stay for a little while but Mr. Diaz was so warm and friendly and his reading took my breath away.

It is days like these which remind me why going to a place like Yale is worth it. It is sometimes hard to keep everything in perspective. There are so many amazingly talented students here, and people can get very competitive. It takes days like today to help me remember the potential Yale has for shaping the teacher I become.

Last Friday's Outfit

My camera is broken. Damn.

I did manage to get some pictures of my outfit a few days ago, but until Samsung sends me a new battery, there will be no new outfit of the day posts.

In other news I bought the boots. Shopping ban fail, part 2.

THE Opening Ceremony Boots

Oy. Once again my shopping ban is tested. I recently got an alert from shopstyle that the boots I have been coveting all year are on sale. 40% off. My finger is itching to hit the add to shopping cart button. HELP!

Daily Ensemble: blazer madness

The infamous Madewell blazer got rave reviews. And so I am even less inclined to continue the shopping ban. But like it or not I need to do something about the amount of money I spend.

I am trying to streamline my shopping habits. The occasional Forever 21 binge is ok, but every week is not. And so I have started making a list of all the pieces I really want. Then I find them on shopstyle, mark them for alerts and when they go on sale I will get an email. Simple, and it makes me think about what I really want vs. need. I'll share my shopstyle wish list soon.

Wearing: madewell blazer, zara dress, uniqlo slip, forever 21 tights, hunter boots, jcrew headband

There is another reason (besides wanting to go easy on my dad's bank account) that I am trying to cut down on random purchases.

I love purses. And I usually am able to find great deals on ebay (though I always check on the Purse Forum for authentication) or bonanzle. But I have fallen deeply in love with the Proenza Schouler PS1 bag (I've mentioned said obsession before) and I am unable to find a good second hand option. Therefore I am trying to save money with the eventual goal of buying the bag for myself. Let's hope I am able to stay focused.

Shopping Ban Fail!

Unfortunately my will power was no match for the mall.

My day started innocently enough when my friend asked me to accompany her to the mall in search of clothing inspired by the Jersey Shore, for a party later in the week. I resisted the calls of Forever 21 and H&M but was no match for the delightful Madewell, which I can only indulge in when in NY city. And so I left with a bag full of super soft and semi sheer t-shirts as well as a mix between a boyfriend blazer and a peacoat, which apparently was that that thing I didn't know I needed until I bought it.

Since finding a picture of any item of Madewell clothing online is the proverbial needle-in-the-haystack, a reveal will have to wait until tomorrow, when I will inevitably be wearing my new items.

Weekend Fun

It's one of my best friends birthday party's tonight. (Happy birthday A!) I'm still debating what to wear (she voted for a red dress, I am still unsure) but hopefully I'll be able to bully hatman into photographer mode.

Anyways, happy weekend everyone! I'm going to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather we've got going on right now and maybe finish up some projects before the craziness of the semester fully kicks in. And on Monday I start my blogging course with the fabulous Holly Becker of Decor8, YAY!

Daily Ensemble: shopping week madness

I woke up in quite a mood this morning, thinking about all the amazing classes I would like to take but can't seem to weasel my way into. An hour later I got an email that cheered me up immensely, I got into Reading the Historical Romance Novel! My schedule is starting to look up.

Wearing: stella mccartney for gap kids shirt, marc jacobs belt, uo jeggings, floral doc martens

Getting into that class means I have a lot more freedom setting my schedule, so I decided to treat myself to starbucks and magazines. I rarely drink coffee, but I was feeling celebratory enough to pay $4 for a caffeine boost.

Drinking: white chocolate mocha (my weakness)

Daily Ensemble: day and night

Last night I went to dinner, saw a movie and generally had a relaxed evening. The beginning of the semester is such a nice time, peaceful, no work... WRONG. The evenings are free of work but the days are full of begging and pleading to get into the best classes and general disappointment.

Wearing: iro shirt, uo black jeggings, shoes from akira chicago
I love these boots, though comfortable is not a word I would use to describe them. I've been seeing buckle boots like this all over the internet but was suspect about the quality level of some of the cheaper options. I am pleased to say these rang in at just $39 and are cute as can be.

For a day of groveling to teachers I wanted to look at least a little professional, in the hopes that wearing something other than jeans or sweatpants might set me apart.

Wearing: jcrew cardigan, old navy shirt, american apparel skirt, assets tights, marais shoes

While home my sister and I went on a shopping spree. She needed a new wardrobe and I am the official style consultant of my family. A whole day, some amazing food and zero tears later we had both achieved our goals. One of my finds was this jcrew cardigan. I found myself attracted to all manner of shiny pretty things so my look for winter seems to be veering towards SPARKLY.

Broken Embraces

I just got back from seeing the new Pedro Almodovar film. Yes, I realize I'm a little late to the party. No, that didn't make it any less amazing. Some critics thought that this wasn't his best movie, and I agree, with reservations. Broken Embraces is not as intense as some of Almodovar's other movies, but it is still a beautiful and moving story. I especially loved the costumes, from 90's power suits to several Audrey Hepburn inspired outfits.

I couldn't find a picture of Penelope Cruz standing up in this suit so this one, of her laying on the ground, will have to do.

The cinematography was gorgeous.

An Audrey moment.

Good Sentiment

The perfect rug for my college dorm room (sent to me by my extremely fashionable brother)

Via moosemother.com also available at CB2

A Really Good Idea!

I'm am on a self imposed shopping ban after break, but I couldn't resist posting this for all those who didn't go a little crazy over the holidays.

LnA's Tank Legging Bodysuit is a combination of their super soft leggings and a tank top (I saw a couple versions with t-shirts as well). It is normally $148 (!) but is now on sale on Freepeople.com for $49.95

I would highly recommend wearing a skirt or shorts over this, as it looks like there is some serious camel-toe potential. On Free people they show it with cute jean shorts.

Collage

Clicking on the picture will enlarge it

These are some of my pictures from Cuba, mostly Havana. I used really easy (and free) website photvisi to make the collage.

Back to School!

I'm back in New Haven after an exhausting day of traveling. I'm listening to Phoenix as I unpack and get ready for the week ahead.

Here at Yale we have an amazing thing called Shopping Week. We get a chance to look at as many classes as we like and talk to the professors, see syllabi and check reading lists before we have to commit to anything. I love this time because it gives me a chance to really think about what I want my schedule to look like each semester.

Some classes I am considering:

The Historical Romance Novel
Reformation Europe, 1450-1650
Society and the Supernatural in Early Modern Europe
The Historical Imagination in Early Modern England
Music in European Thought: Three Moments in the Modern Era
Witchcraft and Witch-hunting in Early Modern Europe and America

So many to choose from!

Cuba, cars, and I don't have another c word

I have a lot of pictures from Cuba. I am in a grand total of one of them. Here it is:

Wearing: tory burch sunglasses, anthropologie jean shirt, zara dress, chanel flats, carrying YSL besace bag

It wasn't hot in Havana, though our days in the country were pretty balmy. And it a very casual country so I felt a little overdressed everywhere I went. I'm used to it.

The rest of my pictures are of cars. Because I was completely mesmerized by the cars. I'm still trying to figure out how best to show them to you, because posting 30+ pictures seems a little excessive. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My experience in Cuba was something I will remember forever. But it is hard to describe. Looking back, we did very little because honestly there isn't much to do sightseeing wise. There is very little commerce, so shopping was out. Mostly we just wandered and took in the immense decay all around. The buildings are so beautiful. I tried to capture some of the detail but it was hard with my little point and shoot. The buildings are also falling down, because almost nothing has been built since 1959. It's like walking into a time capsule, though a very poorly preserved one.

I did manage to find a few little trinkets, including some antique embroidery needles and vintage jewelry which I will be giving as gifts. I'll try and photograph them soon. But for right now I'm trying to enjoy my last days of freedom before the new semester and spend as much time as possible with my sister, dad, and friends. Posting may be sporadic, but I'll try I swear!
